How To Spend 3 Days in the Cotswolds

With its honey-coloured limestone buildings, rolling hills, and idyllic villages, the Cotswolds offers a delightful escape from the bustling city life. If you're planning a visit to this enchanting region this Summer, here's a carefully crafted 3-day itinerary that will help you make the most of your time. We’ve based our tour from Moreton-in-Marsh, where most of our properties can be found, but it’s also an ideal base for exploring other areas of the quintessential English countryside.

Day 1: Moreton-in-Marsh and the Surrounding Area

Start your Cotswolds adventure by immersing yourself in the country charm of Moreton-in-Marsh. This vibrant market town boasts a bustling high street lined with traditional shops, tea rooms, and antique stores. Grab a fresh pastry from one of the many cafes and stroll through the town, taking in the beauty of the historic architecture and vibrant atmosphere.

If you are visiting on a Tuesday, make sure to pay the weekly market a visit. This bustling market offers a variety of local produce, artisanal crafts, and antiques. Take your time exploring the stalls, and perhaps pick up a few souvenirs to remember your visit.

Afterwards, head to the picturesque Batsford Arboretum, just a short drive away or a 30 minute walk over the fields. This stunning 56-acre garden boasts an impressive collection of trees, shrubs and flowers. Take a leisurely walk along the paths, breathe in the fragrant scents and enjoy the tranquillity of this natural oasis. There’s also a lovely playground that little ones will enjoy – once they’re bored of playing hide-and-seek around the trees!

Day 2: Exploring the Cotswold Villages

The Cotswolds is renowned for its charming villages, and today you'll have the opportunity to discover some of the best within a short drive from Moreton-in-Marsh.

Start your day by visiting Chipping Campden, another quintessential Cotswold market town with thatched-roof cottages and beautiful historic buildings. Take a slow stroll along the high street, admire the intricate architecture and explore the various shops and galleries.

From Chipping Campden, make your way to Broadway, often referred to as the ‘Jewel of the Cotswolds’. This picturesque village offers a delightful mix of traditional charm and natural beauty. Pack a picnic and enjoy a countryside walk to Broadway Tower, taking in stunning views of the surrounding countryside. Or for something a little more relaxed, head out of the village along the Cotswold Way, and admire the views of the rolling hills from a more level path.

In the afternoon, head to the charming, ever-popular Stow-on-the-Wold. Discover its historic market square, browse the boutiques and antique shops and soak up the atmosphere of this delightful Cotswold gem. If you are a fan of Lord of the Rings, make sure to get a photo in front of the door of St. Edward’s church.

Day 3: Gardens and Castles

On your final day, explore the natural beauty and historical grandeur of the Cotswolds.

Start your day by visiting Hidcote Manor Garden, located just a short drive from Moreton-in-Marsh. This world-renowned garden is famous for its intricately designed outdoor "rooms" and stunning plant collections. Take your time wandering through the various garden areas and don't miss the breath-taking views from the raised terrace.

Next, head to the nearby Sudeley Castle and Gardens in Winchcombe. This historic castle offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, with its royal connections and stunning architecture. Explore the castle's interior, stroll through the award-winning gardens, and visit the fascinating exhibitions. There’s always plenty of family-friendly activities running during the school holidays, sure to keep everyone entertained.

To conclude your Cotswolds adventure, make your way to Bourton-on-the-Water - the Venice of the Cotswolds’. This charming village is famous for its low stone bridges and quaint riverside setting. Enjoy a leisurely stroll along the River Windrush, visit the model village, and perhaps indulge in a traditional cream tea.
